And we will be playing some of his songs in our Second Set at the Longbranch this Friday (4/1). \nMr. B is Billy Eckstein. He played trumpet and trombone and he led an incredibly influential band which included Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. As Dizzy remembered\, “No other band like this one existed in the world.” \nBut it is his voice we remember today. And if we have to pick one song it would be “I Apologize.” \nRich Martin\, our vibes guy\, saw Mr. B once–appearing with Sarah Vaughan. He doesn’t remember where or when. But he certainly remembers that amazing musical presence. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join the Eddie Piccard Quartet in the Longbranch Lounge for an evening of jazz music. \nEvery Friday the Second Set features music associated with one or two particular stars of the jazz world. \nArguably\, the two most remembered and sung and recorded Holiday songs we have are “White Christmas” and “Easter Parade” The same guy wrote them both: Irving Berlin. \nChristmas is past for the time being\, but Easter is on the way.  In our Second Set this Friday at the Longbranch  (3/25)\, we’re going to feature some of the songs composed by Irving Berlin.  “Easter Parade” will certainly be among them.  And–attention Betty Rogers–“Blue Skies.” \nThis is the last night the Salad Bar will dominate the dance floor for the first hour.  Suitable song titles are still solicited to fit that situation.   \nHope to see you on Friday.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Eddie Piccard Quartet in the Longbranch Lounge for an evening of jazz music. \nThere are two weeks left in the fish fry season–which means that for two more weeks we will open our Friday evenings with the salad bar in the middle of the dance floor. It’s a little daunting\, but we have had some intrepid dancers find space at the end of the salads. \nWe have been trying to think of appropriate song titles–things we might play to fit the occasion. So far there are two favorites: “Lettuce Entertain You” and “The Beet Goes On.” Please send us whatever titles you think of that might work. Don’t worry about the song. We just need the titles. \nThis Friday (3/18) in our Second Set we plan to take the Quartet south–into sunnier climes. We’ll play “Is It True What They Say About Dixie\,” some of the New Orleans melodies\, anything that comes to mind and represents the land of magnolias. If you have requests\, let us know. \nSometime in the future we are thinking about taking the blues to Hollywood. Wouldn’t you like to hear John Wayne sing the blues? Or Jimmy Stewart? We might try some other variations here\, too.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Eddie Piccard Quartet in the Longbranch Lounge for an evening of jazz music. \nThe band has its own groove\, sizzles or swings\, and Eddie sings songs from the inside out. \nEvery Friday the Second Set features music associated with one or two particular stars of the jazz world. \nThis Friday we’re “hitting the road” at the Longbranch.  Perhaps it is because being a jazz musician often meant a life of travel.  Perhaps it is simply because musicians loved the places they lived and worked.  Whatever the cause\, jazz music is full of songs about boulevards\, real and fictitious streets\, routes\, and roads. \n“Basin Street” is one of the most famous.  “Perdido” is a street in New Orleans and a jazz classic.  “On the Street Where You Live” comes to us from the stage\, “Green Dolphin Street” from the world of film.  And “Route 66″ was a gift from Nat “King” Cole. \nWe can’t cover the whole map in one night\, but we will explore some of these songs this Friday (2/5) in our Second Set at the Longbranch. \nHope you can join us in our musical travels.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Eddie Piccard Quartet in the Longbranch Lounge for an evening of jazz music. \nThe band has its own groove\, sizzles or swings\, and Eddie sings songs from the inside out. \nEvery Friday the Second Set features music associated with one or two particular stars of the jazz world. \nThis Friday (1/29) in our Second Set at the Longbranch\, we will feature music associated with Benny Goodman and Matt Dennis. \nBenny Goodman\, the King of Swing\, needs no introduction.  He was famous both for his big band and for his smalls combos (the most famous of all the combos starred Teddy Wilson\, Lionel Hampton\, and Gene Krupa). \nMatt Dennis was both a performer and a writer.  People often don’t remember the names of the composers behind the jazz canon\, but they certainly remember the work these people produced.  Among other tunes\, Matt Dennis wrote “Everything Happens to Me” and the haunting “Angel Eyes.” \nThings should be swinging.  Hope you can join us.
